If you own a Prius in Orange County, there’s a good chance I’ve been out to your neighborhood already. Anaheim, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine — I’ve picked up Priuses from driveways, parking lots, storage units, and side streets in every one of those cities. Folks buy these cars new, drive them 150,000 or 200,000 miles, and then one day the battery warning pops on, or the engine starts acting funny, and the repair quote from the shop is a shock.

So here’s what I want you to know — I’ll buy your Prius in just about any condition. Battery light on, engine running rough, won’t start at all, high miles, expired registration. Just call me at (714) 900-3723 and tell me what’s going on with it. I’m Sonny Miller from GoCarBuyer.com, and I’ve been buying cars in this area for over 20 years.

Why Priuses Are Still Worth Real Money

A lot of Prius owners think their car is junk when the battery goes. It’s not. Here’s the truth — a hybrid battery replacement runs between $800 and $1,500 at most specialty shops that rebuild them. Brand new aftermarket ones are $1,500 to $2,500. So when some junkyard offers you $400 because the battery light is on, they’re way underpaying you. The car still has real value because whoever buys it can put a new battery in and drive it another 5 or 6 years easy.

That’s why I pay more than the scrap yards for these cars. I know what a Prius with a fresh battery is really worth. Plus, gas prices aren’t going down anytime soon, so demand for fuel-efficient hybrids stays strong.

What I See Across the Different Generations

2004 to 2009 — Second Generation

These are the old-school Priuses that just keep running. I still buy them all the time, even ones with 250,000 miles on them. At that mileage though, two issues start showing up that owners should know about.

The ABS actuator (brake system unit) starts failing on a lot of these. The part itself isn’t crazy expensive used, but the labor to get it out of the car is huge because you have to take apart the whole area under the windshield to access it. That’s why a lot of owners decide to sell instead of repair.

Fuel system issues are showing up more and more on older Priuses. Sometimes the fuel gauge reads wrong, sometimes you can’t even fill the tank up all the way. The tank on these is sealed, meaning it’s not designed to be taken apart easily, so repair is a big job. I’ve been buying more of these lately because the repair cost just doesn’t make sense for most folks.

2010 to 2015 — Third Generation

These are the ones with the known head gasket problems. If your Prius is losing coolant but you can’t see any leak underneath the car, the gasket is probably going. Fix at a shop runs $2,500 to $4,500. Now here’s where I’ll be straight with you — I don’t buy Priuses with blown head gaskets. It’s just not my area.

What I’d recommend is getting it properly diagnosed first at a shop, and if it is the gasket, you’re usually better off either fixing it, or selling it to a specialty Prius mechanic or engine rebuilder who can make it worth their time. Those folks have the tools and parts to do the job right and will pay more than I could for a car in that condition.

The EGR system (part of the emissions) also gets clogged up with carbon on these. Causes a check engine light and sometimes a rough idle or misfire. A lot of times this can be cleaned out instead of replaced, but it’s still labor hours at a shop.

Other stuff I see on third gens — water pump failures (they’re electric on these), the center dashboard screen going out, and the small bulbs on the license plate area melting their sockets. Minor stuff compared to the head gasket but all adds up.

2016 to 2022 — Fourth Generation

Way fewer problems on these. Toyota fixed most of the issues from the third gen. The hybrid system got more refined and the engine doesn’t have the same gasket problem. Most of these I buy are folks trading up, downsizing, or just ready for something new. If yours is running well, I pay strong money for it.

2023 and Newer — Fifth Generation

Too new to know long-term reliability yet, but these look and drive really nice. If you’re selling a newer Prius for any reason — upgrading, moving, whatever — I buy those too.

You Don’t Need to Drive It to Me

If your Prius doesn’t run, or doesn’t start, or has been sitting for a year, that’s fine. I come to wherever the car is. Driveway, side street, garage, storage unit — doesn’t matter. I handle towing arrangements if needed, and I bring the paperwork so you don’t have to go to the DMV or deal with any of that.

What If the Prius Has Other Problems Too?

Hybrids that have been sitting usually have more than one issue. Maybe the battery is weak AND the car has expired registration, or it has high miles AND a check engine light. Tell me everything when you call and I’ll give you one straight number that covers the whole picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you buy a Prius with a bad hybrid battery?

Yes, I buy them every single week. A dead or dying hybrid battery doesn’t kill the car’s value because replacement runs $800 to $1,500 at most specialty shops. So I pay fair money knowing the car still has real use left in it.

How much is a Prius worth with 200,000 miles?

Depends on year and condition. A 2nd gen from 2007 or 2008 with a tired battery is usually still worth $1,500 to $3,000. A 3rd gen with a clean title and decent running condition can bring $3,500 or more. Call me with the year, mileage, and what’s going on and I’ll give you a real number.

What’s causing my Prius to knock on cold startup?

If it’s a 2010 to 2015, usually one of two things — the head gasket starting to go, or the EGR system clogged with carbon buildup. Both cause a brief misfire on startup that goes away once the engine warms up. Get it diagnosed at a shop first so you know which one it is. If it’s EGR only, that’s a repairable issue and I’ll still buy the car. If it’s the head gasket, I’d point you toward a specialty Prius shop instead — that’s not my area.

Which Prius generation is the most reliable?

The 2004 to 2009 models are known for being the most bulletproof long-term. The 2010 to 2015 models have the head gasket issue I mentioned. The 2016 and newer ones are holding up really well so far.

Can I sell a Prius that doesn’t start?

Depends on why it doesn’t start. If the battery is dead, the 12V auxiliary battery is shot, or it’s been sitting too long — yes, I’ll still buy it. If the engine itself has failed due to a blown head gasket or major internal damage, that’s not my area and I’d point you to a specialty Prius shop instead. So just call me and tell me what a mechanic said, and I’ll give you a straight answer.

Will you buy a Prius with a blown head gasket?

Honestly, no. I’ll be straight with you — Priuses with blown head gaskets aren’t my area. The repair is specialized and the parts are specific to the hybrid system. Your best bet is a specialty Prius shop or a hybrid engine rebuilder. They’ll pay more for a gasket-failed Prius than I could because they have the tools and expertise to fix it profitably. So I’d rather point you in the right direction than lowball you.

What if my Prius has a salvage or rebuilt title?

Still buy them. I deal with salvage title vehicles all the time. The price is lower because salvage titles affect resale value, but I’m not going to turn the deal down just because of the paperwork.

Ready to Get Rid of That Prius?

Call me and tell me the year, the miles, and what’s going on with it. I’ll give you a real number — not some generic hybrid quote from an algorithm. I cover all of Orange County and all of SoCal, I come to you, and I pay the same day.
