Tips to Get More Money for Your Work Truck

These tips apply whether you’re selling privately or to a buyer like me. The difference is, if you sell to me, you don’t have to worry about most of this — I buy work trucks in any condition. But if you’re trying to get every last dollar, here’s what actually moves the needle.

Tip 1: Clean Your Work Truck Inside and Out

I know work trucks get messy. Job sites, mud, tools everywhere — it happens. But do your best to clean it out really well before you try to sell it. Clean out the tailgate, the utility box, the bed. If you’ve got drawers or custom shelving, empty them out and wipe them down. Clean the cab inside — get the stains out of the seats, wipe down the dash, vacuum the floors. You’d be surprised what a good wash does. Five to ten bucks for some Armor All on the tires makes it look like somebody actually cared about this truck. And that matters when a buyer shows up.

Tip 2: Fix Minor Hardware

Little things matter when you’re selling a work truck. Door handles, light bulbs, the handles on your utility bed or box — if they’re broken or missing, fix them. These are cheap repairs that make the truck look maintained instead of neglected. A buyer sees a broken door handle and starts wondering what else is wrong. A buyer sees everything working and thinks this truck was taken care of.

Tip 3: Leave the Universal Accessories On

If you have a universal ladder rack, leave it on — it adds value. The next buyer is probably a plumber, electrician, or contractor who needs that rack. Same thing with camper shells. If you’ve got a camper shell on your truck and you don’t need it anymore, leave it. It makes the truck more useful to the next owner and that means more money in your pocket. The only things you should remove are custom company-specific equipment that nobody else would want.

Tip 4: Scan for Check Engine Lights

Before you list your work truck or call me for a quote, scan it with an OBD2 scanner. You can pick one up at Walmart for about $30-40, or get it scanned for free at any AutoZone or O’Reilly’s. The check engine light might be something minor — a gas cap, an oxygen sensor, something that costs $20 to fix. If you can clear that light for cheap, your truck is worth more. If the code comes back as something expensive, don’t throw money at it — just sell it as-is. That’s where I come in.

Silverado and Sierra 1500s, 2500s, 3500s, 4500s, 5500s. The Duramax diesel trucks hold value well, but I buy the gas trucks too. Older Chevy work trucks from the ’90s and 2000s with the 5.3 or 6.0 Vortec are still solid trucks with a lot of life in them — I see the value in those even with high miles.

Ram and Dodge Work Trucks

Ram 1500s, 2500s, 3500s, 4500s, 5500s. The Cummins diesel Rams are especially popular — they run forever and hold value better than almost any other diesel truck. Even the older Dodge Rams with the 5.9 Cummins are still worth real money.

Utility Trucks, Flatbeds, and Service Bodies

If your work truck has a utility bed, service body, flatbed, stake bed, or dump bed — I buy those too. These trucks are harder to sell privately because the average buyer doesn’t need a service body.
