Watch: How GoCarBuyer Works

Tip 1: Clean Your Fleet Vehicle Really Well

You want to get it ready for sale, so you want to clean out any extra materials or debris if it’s in the back of a truck or in the back of a cargo van, and any unnecessary equipment you want to remove. Any specialized equipment such as specialty racks or specialty shelving for cargo vans — this makes the sell easier for you if you’re trying to sell private party because you’ll get a broader customer base. You also want to clean the interior and exterior really well and take proper photos.

Tip 2: Get Your Paperwork in Order

As a fleet manager or as a company owner, if you have detailed maintenance records, it really helps to sell your fleet vehicle. You should get those in order and have them ready in a folder for the customer. This really adds value to selling your fleet vehicle.

Tip 3: Get It Running as Best as Possible

If there’s any minor check engine lights or any codes, if they are easy fixes, you should be thinking about fixing those because that adds value and a smoother sale process for the customer. By the way, I purchase them regardless of any mechanical issues.

Tip 4: Make a Detailed List of Your Fleet

You want to get a detailed list of all the vehicles you’re trying to sell — year, make, model, miles, and any details you could add in the description. Make a detailed list. The more details, the better. Try not to leave anything out.

Tip 5: Fix Anything That’s Cheap and Easy

Door handles, light bulbs, small things like that — any cheap fixes makes the sell a lot easier. These are just examples, but depending on your vehicle, if there are small fixes, I suggest that you should fix them.

But with me, you don’t have to fix anything because I purchase all types of fleet vehicles, whether it’s cargo vans or work trucks, box trucks, any condition, any make, any model. We take that hassle out of it. You don’t have to deal with any DMV paperwork, maintenance paperwork, titles, or registration back fees. I take the headache out of all of these scenarios.

Tips for Non-Compliant Vehicles

I also wanted to help you out with non-compliant vehicles because we purchase those too, due to the California laws. I know this affected a lot of companies. But there is a way to sell these vehicles for more than what we could offer as well.

To sell the non-compliant vehicles due to California laws, you can sell out of state. I would highly suggest you do this via Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.

Facebook Marketplace

You would want to follow out-of-state groups on Facebook, and there are also specific groups for these types of vehicles. Search up groups like heavy duty vehicle groups, Chevy groups, Ford groups, Isuzu work truck groups — follow these groups and post your commercial vehicles or non-compliant vehicles on there. Even follow the out-of-state groups for specifically selling vehicles. When posting, add a detailed description about your vehicle and take a lot of photos — 50 to 100, maybe even more. Facebook allows 20 photos and one video.

Craigslist

You would post on Craigslist out of state such as Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, even New Mexico. But remember when you’re selling out of state, they’re either gonna have to come to you or you’re gonna have to drive to them. I know it’s a little difficult as a California resident, and knowing these regulations affect pricing of the vehicle, you cannot sell them in California anymore due to the fact that you cannot register them in California if they’re a certain year and weight.

Catalytic Converter Theft Protection for Fleet Vehicles

Another thing I wanted to tell you about is catalytic converter theft. If you did not know, there is such thing as catalytic converter prevention equipment such as catalytic converter shields, guards, cages, cage protectors, or armor plates. This is very common in Southern California — whether you’re in Riverside County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County — it happens all over California. And these fleet vehicles are prone to catalytic converter theft, as all you company owners know.

There’s not that much money to put one of these on your company vehicles. It might be worth the investment for the long run because it prevents catalytic converter theft by making it a lot harder for thieves to steal it. Some popular options fleet owners use include CatStrap, CatClamp, Miller CAT Shields, and for heavy-duty commercial trucks the Monroe Cat Cage. You can also check out California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations for the latest rules on compliant vehicles.
